THE SUNDAY AGE

Sunday December 26, 1993

Jane Freeman

Jane Freeman's choice of the 10 worst fashion mistakes of 1993 Leopard-print lycra tights: all those legs twinkling around looking nylony and busy but no one ever found a top that looked good with them.

Platform clogs: the most chunky unflattering footwear this side of Doc Martens.

Flared jeans: strained affectation that showed how dull denim could be when it was not long and lean.

Centre hair parts: suddenly everyone's fat, crooked noses were exposed. Was it worth it? Crocheted fashion: any excuse to wear grandma's old tablecloths or show off very ordinary underwear.

Grunge: dirty, drab and ugly. Even Claudia looked daggy in that repulsive striped outfit from Chapel Street.

Three-piece pin-stripe suits for women: turned any woman into a chunky cube.

Singlets worn over T-shirts: a look that caused everyone to walk around with their T-shirts bunched up into their arm holes, just for the sake of being different.

Scrunchy sundresses: cheap things with no style, no flow, no cut and dangerous if worn too close to a naked flame.

The waif look: ``Hey, why not torment gullible women even more?" they thought to themselves.
